Tourist Places in Udaipur

Udaipur is known as the city of lakes and was initially the capital of Tripura till 1760 AD. It is a beautiful town located in the state of Tripura and is famous for the Tripura Sundari Temple and the artificial lakes located here. Some of the important  tourist places in Udaipur are:

Kalyan sagar in UdaipurKalyan Sagar

The Kalyan Sagar lake is situated on the eastern side of the Tripura Sundari temple. It is a big and natural pond. It is a famous lake in Tripura. The pond dates back to the period of Maharaja Kalian Manikya (1625-1660 AD). It was dug up 124 years after the Tripura Sundari temple was founded. The lake spreads over an area of 2.752 acres. The length of the lake is 224 yards and width is 160 yards. There are also hills surrounding the lake.

The Kalyan Sagar lake has varieties of aqua species. It is famous for the rare species of tortoise which are found here in large numbers. The lake is home to fishes and tortoise of different shape and size. Devotees offer puffed rice and biscuit to them. Fishing is, however, not permitted in the lake.

The Hindus consider the Kalyan Sagar lake as auspicious and sacred. Devotees worship the tortoise and fishes in the lake. Carrying plastic poly bag is banned in the area.

Pilak in TripuraPilak

Pilak is situated 61 km from Udaipur. It is a treasure house of Hindu and Buddhist sculpture. The place is a historical one and is important for the archeological remains of the 8th and 9th century in the state of Tripura. It is situated 100 km from Agartala.


Pilak is a historical place which dates back to the 8th and 9th century. Images scattered in an area of about 10 sq km have been found in the place. The images, terracotta plaques and sealing found in Pilak reflect the survival of heterodox creed and sects that represent both Hinduism and Buddhism. Colossal stone images of Avolokiteshwar and Narasimha have also been found in the place.

Pilak is a matter of interest to both the archeologists and the tourists visiting Tripura. The sculptures of Pilak are its major attraction. Tourists are also spellbound by the surroundings of the place which is abundant in lush green valleys. Paddy fields could be seen around the place.

Excavation work

The historical importance of Pilak is evident from the excavations carried out in the place. In the recent excavations a number of gold coins, rock cut inscriptions and images of Buddha have been found in the place that indicate that Pilak has a close connection with Mainamoti, an ancient Buddhist centre.


This is a beautiful place situated about 62 kms away from Udaipur. The place is famous for the beauty and tranquility which prevails here. The famous Dumbur Hydroelectricity project which is the main source of power in the South Tripura district is located here. Two rivers namely the Raima and Sarma which originate in the Dhalai district merge here in Tirthamukh and the Gumti River emerges from the Dumbur reservoir situated here.

The Dumbur reservoir is famous for the different bird species it attracts. Every year migratory and residential birds flock in this reservoir. The famous Tirthamukh Mela is held here every year where people from neighboring places come to take a holy dip in the Gumti River and perform various rituals. This mela has a special significance for the tribal population here.

Deer Park and Patichari

This deer park is situated in Patichari on the Udaipur-Sabroom main road. This place is famous for the spotted deer and barking deer found here.
