Tripura Sundari Temple

Tourists cannot step out of Tripura without visiting the Tripura sundari temple, a famous temple situated in Udaipur. The Tripura Sundari Temple is one of the 51 pithasthans (Shrine of the Goddess of Power) in India. Popularly known as Matabari, the temple is situated atop a hillock.

Legends regarding the temple
Shiva gets furious when Sati immolates herself, and performes the Tandava dance (dance of destroy). Seeing this destroying dance, Gods and Devatas go to Lord Vishnu and plead for stopping Shiva. Lord Vishnu then cuts the corpse of Sita and the body parts fall in different parts of the earth. The right foot of Sati falls at Matabari on the southwestern outskirts of Udaipur town. Because of this Matabari is considered revered by the Hindus. Matabari is known as a pithasthan. Maharaja Dhanya Manikya installed the image of the Goddess in the temple in 1501.

Structure of the temple
The Tripura Sundari temple dates back to 500 years. The shape of the temple resembles a Kurma tortoise. The roof of the temple is shaped like the humped back of the tortoise therefore it is called Kurma Pith. The temple consists of square type sanctum of typical Bengali hut type structure with a conical dome. There are two identical images of the same deity, known as Tripura Sundari which is 5 feet in height. It is the presiding deity of the temple. The other idol is called Chotoma which is 2 feet in height and stands beside the presiding deity. The temple measures 24 sq feet at the base and has a height of 75 feet.

Goddess Kali is the presiding deity of the temple. The idol of Goddess Kali is made up of reddish black Kastic pathar. Ma Kali is worshiped in her Soroshi form in the temple. Inside the temple there is also a smaller idol of Kali called Chotto Maa. This image was used to be carried by Maharajas of Tripura during Mrigaya namely hunting and also during war. Animals (Goats) sacrifice is practiced in the temple. Every year on Diwali a mela is organized in the temple premises and during this time the temple is flocked by more than two lakh pilgrims.
